Login or Register to make a submission.

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Article Type

Please refer to the article types of Science Insights® (SI).

LANGUAGE

Only American English is accepted for publication.

Use of language

Authors should note that they are writing for an international audience. National colloquialisms and idiomatic use of language should be avoided to the extent possible. Word choices and sentence constructions that might imply bias against persons on the basis of gender, racial or ethnic group membership, disability, sexual orientation, or age should be avoided.

PUBLICATION FREQUENCY

SI publishes manuscript(s) instantaneously once the acceptance was decided.

FORMATTING ELECTRONIC FILES

All selected articles need to be submitted by the authors or our coordinator(s) into the manuscript processing system via the online submission form.

Please adhere to the requirements below when submitting.

Acceptable Formats

  • Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx)(any recent version)
  • Rich Text Format (.rtf)

File Contents

Word documents should be submitted as a single file. Authors should submit figures as separate files, in TIFF (.tif) or EPS (.eps) (not GIF [.gif] or JPEG [.jpg]) format.

Please note that authors of accepted manuscripts may be required to submit high-resolution hard copies of all figures during production, as not all digital art files are usable.

In addition to the main manuscript file, submit your cover letter as a separate file in the same format as your main file. If you used any revision or editorial tracking tools in your word-processing program, be sure your manuscript's final version does not contain tracked changes.

Revised and Final Versions of Manuscripts

If you are submitting a revised manuscript, please include your responses to the editor's comments as part of the cover letter file. When submitting a revised manuscript with figures, including all figures, even if they have not changed since the previous version. The final version of your manuscript must be submitted in Word (doc.) or Rich Text (.rtf) format because your keystrokes will be used in publication; a PDF does not contain usable character data and is thus not adequate. For both revised and final versions of manuscripts, please observe the same formatting instructions outlined above.

GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS

Anonymity of Authors

The first editors review all potential articles first, and those deemed appropriate for SI are sent anonymously to at least two other expert editors for review. The editors rely heavily on second editors' judgments, although they do not bound the first editors. Strong efforts are made to ensure prompt decisions about the selection. To protect anonymity, only the title should appear on the manuscript. All identifying references and notes should be separated from other references and notes. Citations in the text to these references should be to "Identifying Reference" and the publication date.

Manuscript Selection Policy

Manuscripts are selected for publication subject to copyediting. After selection, the manuscript submission into the system indicates the author's commitment to publish in SI and give SI the right to edit if necessary. No paper is known to be under consideration by another journal.

Preparation of Copy

  • Type all copy double spaced—including indented matter, footnotes, and references—and allow generous margins at the top, bottom, and sides of the page.
  • Footnotes are to be used only for substantive observations. Number footnotes consecutively, and place them on a separate page titled "Notes."
  • Include an abstract (< 300 words) summarizing the paper's chief contribution.

Tables and Figures

Each table should be typed double spaced on a separate page and referred to in numerical order in the text. Do not use vertical lines within the table. Place footnotes at the bottom of the table; indicate footnotes with lowercase letters.

Figures should be submitted as high-quality computer graphics.

REFERENCES

SI has special requirements for references. Considering the copyright and efforts the authors made, the Journal requires to list all the authors of the reference. The references should appear in sequence in Arabic numbers in parentheses like “(1)” in the text. Please format your references as the following examples:
